#70 | The Original Was Better…Except When It Wasn’t (feat. The Couch Tomato)

The Couch Tomato, of the YouTube channel of the same name and the #cinematiclivesmatter podcast, joins Brandon, Kareem, John, and Ken for a discussion where we pit film remakes, both classic and modern, against their cinematic predecessors. We debate the merits of many films, as well as which version – the original, the remake, both, or neither – is the better film.

Remade films discussed in this episode range from films where it’s clear the remake was trash (“Psycho”, “RoboCop”, “Fantastic Four”, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”), to versions where the remake is considered better (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, “The Man Who Knew Too Much”, “Little Shop of Horrors”), to those that lead to rather spirited discussions over which to choose (“Sparkle”, “Hairspray”, and the returning champion of these debates, “Man of Steel”). Do our assessments line up with yours? Listen in and find out!

Join Brandon, John, Kareem, Ken, and Jamison as we discuss, dissect, and try to make sense of the past, present, and future in film, television, music, animation, race relations in media - and on occasion comics and tech - while trying to remain sane. If you’re tired of hearing the same (*ahem*) monochromatic take on modern media, we’re the podcast for you!
